Driving School
Scoobz is a driving school that teaches automatic lessons in English for internationals and expats across the Netherlands. Your instructor picks you up at home, school or work, and you start with a free trial lesson.
An English speaking driving school for automatic lessons
Moving to the Netherlands often means learning a new traffic culture. Cyclists come from every side, roundabouts follow their own logic and priority rules can surprise you. Our lessons are taught in English, so you understand every instruction while you focus on the road.
We only teach in automatic cars. That keeps your attention on traffic instead of the clutch. Keep in mind that an automatic exam gives you code 78 on your licence. With that code you may only drive cars without a clutch pedal. Passing a new practical exam in a manual car removes it later.
Already holding a licence from another country? Depending on where it was issued, you can sometimes exchange it. In other cases you need to pass the CBR exams. Rules differ per country, so check your own situation first. After that, our driving school helps you prepare for every step that applies to you.

What surprises expats on Dutch roads
Picture a quiet street with a sign that says fietsstraat. Many newcomers assume the car has priority, yet here the bicycle sets the pace and you stay behind it. Moments like this are why lessons in your own language matter. When your instructor explains the reason behind a rule, it sticks much faster than a translated road sign.
Cyclists also change how you turn right. Before you leave the road, you check your mirror and look over your shoulder for bikes coming up beside you. Roundabouts bring another habit to learn, because cyclists on the outer ring often have priority. Then there is the practical exam itself. It lasts 55 minutes and includes independent driving plus special manoeuvres such as parking and turning the car. Our instructors practise each part with you in English. As a result, you arrive at the exam knowing exactly what the examiner wants to see, even if Dutch traffic still felt foreign a few months earlier.
Questions about our driving school
Leave your details and we answer your question personally.
Ask your question →Are all lessons really taught in English?
Yes. Every lesson in this programme is given in English, from the free trial lesson to the final session before your exam. Your instructor explains Dutch traffic rules, road signs and exam expectations in plain English. That way you never have to guess what a correction means while you are driving. Many students also appreciate learning the Dutch terms for common signs along the way. You will see them on the road every day after you pass. The goal is that you feel at home in Dutch traffic, not just that you pass a test.
Can I exchange my foreign driving licence?
That depends on the country where your licence was issued. Some foreign licences can be exchanged for a Dutch one. In other cases you need to pass the CBR exams before you may drive here. The rules are set by Dutch authorities and differ per country, so please check your own situation with them first. We cannot decide this for you. What we can do is prepare you for the exams if you need them. Many experienced drivers still take a few lessons to get used to local traffic.
What does code 78 on my licence mean?
Code 78 appears on your licence when you pass the practical exam in an automatic car. It means you may only drive cars without a clutch pedal. For most expats that is no problem, because automatic cars are very common in the Netherlands. Should you want to drive a manual car later, you can remove the code. To do that, you pass a new practical exam in a manual car. Since Scoobz only teaches automatic, every student who passes with us receives code 78 on their licence.
How much do lessons cost?
Our English lessons follow the same packages as our Dutch automatic programme. Opfrissen costs €560 for 8 lesson hours, without an exam. Examenklaar costs €1,120 for 16 lesson hours plus the CBR practical exam. Compleet costs €2,046 for 24 lesson hours plus the exam, and you can pay in instalments. Zorgeloos is the most chosen package at €2,702. It includes 34 lesson hours, the exam, payment in instalments and help with fear of failure. All prices include VAT and there is no registration fee.
Do I need to pass a theory exam first?
If your licence cannot be exchanged, you will need the CBR theory exam for licence B. It covers hazard perception, knowledge and insight. Once you pass, your theory certificate stays valid for one and a half years. Within that time you should pass your practical exam. Failing the practical exam does not mean redoing theory, as long as the certificate is still valid. Our driving school focuses on the practical lessons and exam. Ask through the form if you want advice on planning both parts.
What happens during the free trial lesson?
The trial lesson is a relaxed first drive with your instructor. You get to know the car, the controls and the way we explain things. During the drive, the instructor watches how you handle steering, speed and basic traffic situations. Based on that, you get honest advice about the number of lessons you will probably need. There is no obligation to continue afterwards. Booking works through the form on our website. Choose a moment that suits you, and the instructor can pick you up at home, school or work.
I am nervous about driving in a new country. Can you help?
Feeling nervous is completely normal, especially when traffic works differently from what you know. Help with fear of failure is part of how we teach. In practice that means starting on quieter roads and building up to busier junctions at your pace. Having one fixed instructor also helps, because you do not have to get used to someone new. Longer lessons of 90 or 120 minutes give you time to settle in before the harder parts. The Zorgeloos package includes specific support for students with exam anxiety.
How quickly can I start, and how do I sign up?
There is no waiting list, so you can usually start right away. Signing up works through the form on our website, where you can plan a free trial lesson. Contact runs through that form only, which keeps all your details and appointments in one place. Mention in the form that you would like lessons in English. Also tell us your preferred times, since evening and weekend lessons are possible. In a hurry? A crash course is available for students who need their licence quickly.
