I have never driven. Is that a problem?
Not at all. Plenty of learners start without any experience. Your first lesson takes place on quiet streets, for example in Fort-Zeekant or Halsteren, where you learn steering, braking and looking around without pressure. The automatic car helps, since gears and a clutch are out of the picture. Gradually your instructor adds roundabouts, the busier parts of town and eventually the historic centre and the A4. Everything is explained in English, so every instruction is clear the moment you hear it. Beginners usually need more lessons than experienced drivers, which is why packages C and D are often a good fit.
Will my lessons include the historic centre?
Yes, once you are ready for it. The historic centre of Bergen op Zoom has narrow streets, parked cars and pedestrians close by. That makes it a valuable training ground, though not a place to start. Basic control is built first on quieter roads. When you steer accurately and look around automatically, the centre follows. There you practise judging width, giving way to oncoming traffic and moving at walking pace when needed. The guide on this page covers these situations in more detail. Confidence usually grows quickly after a few sessions there, because the centre demands full attention and rewards it.
Can teenagers in an expat family start here?
Yes, the Dutch age limits apply to everyone. At 16 a teenager may sit the theory exam, and driving lessons may begin at 16 and a half. Through 2toDrive, the practical exam is possible from 17. Until turning 18, the young driver then needs a coach on board who meets the CBR conditions. Lessons can be planned around school hours, and pick up from school is included. For families in Noordgeest, Halsteren or Steenbergen, that saves a lot of driving back and forth. Lessons are fully in English, which helps teenagers who have not learned Dutch yet or who simply think faster in English.
Do you collect learners in Halsteren and Tholen?
We do. Collection at home, school or work applies throughout Bergen op Zoom and the surrounding area. That includes Halsteren, Tholen, Woensdrecht, Steenbergen and Roosendaal. Starting near your own address means you practise the roads you will drive every day. Later in the training, your lessons also include faster roads like the A4 and A58. You simply give your address when planning a lesson. The same instructor meets you there each time, and you are brought back afterwards. Lessons in the evening or at the weekend follow the same arrangement, so being collected never depends on the time of day.
What is in package B?
Package B, called Examenklaar, costs €1,120 including VAT. It gives you 16 lessons of 60 minutes and the CBR practical exam. Payment in instalments is not available for this package. Package B suits learners who already have some driving experience, perhaps from abroad, and want a clear route to the exam. The lessons go to Dutch habits, the historic centre and motorway practice on the A4 or A58. Beginners usually need more hours and tend to choose package C or D. As with every package, unused lessons are refunded.
Can I plan lessons myself?
Yes. You schedule lessons yourself, which keeps you in control of your week. Evening and weekend lessons are possible, and you choose between 60, 90 or 120 minutes. This flexibility matters for people working shifts or studying. You keep the same instructor, so even with an irregular schedule your lessons connect to each other. Shorter lessons suit the early stages. Longer ones work well for routes that combine the centre, the roundabouts in Meilust and a stretch of motorway. Pick up and drop off stay included whichever slot you choose, whether that is a weekday evening or a Saturday.
Are the lesson cars new?
Yes, Scoobz teaches in new automatic lesson cars. Learning in an automatic removes the clutch and gear changes, so your attention can stay on traffic. In the narrow streets of the historic centre, that is a real advantage. You can creep forward at walking pace using only the brake. Passing the exam in an automatic gives code 78, which limits you to cars without a clutch pedal. Every Scoobz lesson is automatic, as manual lessons are not offered. For most learners that is exactly what they need. Should you want a manual licence later, a new practical exam in a manual car removes the code.
