From the passenger seat to the driver's seat

Many people arrive in Helmond and soon notice how much a car opens up. Work in Eindhoven, family in Deurne, friends in Gemert. Public transport covers part of it, yet a licence gives you the rest.

Scoobz teaches automatic only, in new lesson cars, and every lesson is in English. You get a fixed instructor who learns how you think behind the wheel. That continuity saves time, because nobody has to rediscover your weak spots each week. Our driving school Helmond lessons start where you are, so there is no travelling to an office first.

Did you already drive abroad? Whether a foreign licence can be exchanged depends on the country that issued it, so check that with the official authorities. If exchange is not an option, you follow the CBR route described further down this page.

Where Helmond lessons take you

Your first lessons usually stay inside a quiet neighbourhood. Brouwhuis, Rijpelberg and Warande offer calm streets where steering, braking and looking around can settle. Brandevoort comes next, because its roundabouts arrive one after another and train your lane choice and signalling. The Kasteeltraverse is a different test. It runs through the centre, so you combine traffic lights, pedestrians and lane changes in a short stretch. Near the station, cyclists appear from several sides at once, which teaches patience at every turn. Once you feel steady, the A270 and N270 towards Eindhoven show you how to merge and keep a safe gap at higher speed. Learners in Geldrop, Mierlo or Nuenen start from their own door. Stiphout and Dierdonk are covered as well, so daily roads become lesson roads.

Background

How the Dutch licence works for expats

Plan within 18 months

Your theory certificate expires after one and a half years. Start lessons well before that date.

Two CBR exams stand between you and a Dutch category B licence. The theory exam comes first and tests hazard perception, knowledge and insight. After passing, your certificate remains valid for one and a half years, so it pays to plan practical lessons inside that window. Busy professionals sometimes pass theory and then postpone lessons for months. During the 55 minute practical exam you show independent driving and special manoeuvres like parking and turning. Since Scoobz teaches in automatic cars, your licence will carry code 78. With code 78 you may drive cars without a clutch pedal only. Younger family members can start earlier, with theory from 16 and lessons from 16 and a half. Through 2toDrive they may take the practical exam at 17. Until 18 they then drive accompanied by a coach meeting the CBR conditions.

02

Theory certificate

Study for and pass the CBR theory exam, with its parts on hazard perception, knowledge and insight.

03

Your instructor writes a personal lesson plan. Driving experience from abroad shortens it where possible.

04

Neighbourhood to motorway

Quiet streets come first, then Brandevoort roundabouts, the Kasteeltraverse and finally the A270.

05

Exam request

When you are ready, we request and arrange the practical exam at the nearest CBR exam centre.

★

Drive away licensed

After 55 minutes with the examiner, a pass adds category B with code 78.

Exam

What the examiner looks at

Your practical exam is held at the nearest CBR exam centre and lasts 55 minutes. Expect a mix of independent driving and set manoeuvres. The examiner judges how safely you take part in traffic.

01

Brandevoort roundabouts come in quick succession, so check your mirror and signal before every single exit.

02

On the Kasteeltraverse, read the lane arrows early and settle into your lane before the next traffic light.

03

Joining the A270, use the full slip road to build speed and find your gap before you move across.

Roundabout guide

Roundabouts the Dutch way

Brandevoort alone can give you more roundabouts in one lesson than some learners met in years abroad. Most are simple once you know the pattern. Trouble starts when habits from another country kick in, such as signalling on entry or forgetting the cyclists. This short guide covers the approach, the exit and the bikes.

01

Approach and entry

Slow down well before the roundabout and read the signs. In most cases shark's teeth tell you to give way to traffic already circling. Choose your lane early if there are two. Keep your speed low enough to stop, because hesitation halfway through the entry causes more trouble than a calm full stop. Look left for traffic on the roundabout, then glance right for cyclists and pedestrians on the crossings. Only drive on when the space is clearly yours. An automatic helps here, as you can creep forward with the brake alone and keep both eyes on traffic.

02

Leaving at the right moment

In the Netherlands you do not signal when entering a roundabout. You signal right just before your exit, so others know you are leaving. Do it too early and drivers waiting to enter may think you leave sooner. Do it too late and they cannot use your gap. A handy reference is the exit before yours. As soon as you pass it, switch the indicator on. Then check your right mirror, because a cyclist on the outer path may be crossing your exit. Leave at a calm speed and keep the steering wheel steady.

03

Cycle paths around the circle

Many roundabouts have a separate cycle path running around them. Whether cyclists there have priority depends on the signs and markings, so read them every time instead of guessing. Shark's teeth on your side before the cycle crossing mean you wait. When you leave, bikes may come from the left and from the right, since some paths carry traffic both ways. Instructors see learners look only one way all the time. The fix is simple. Make a full head turn before each crossing, even when the path looks empty. Near the station in Helmond, this habit pays off on almost every lesson.

Ask your question →
Is Helmond a good place to learn to drive?

It is, mainly because the town offers so much variety within a short distance. Quiet streets in Warande or Rijpelberg suit your first hours behind the wheel. The roundabouts of Brandevoort then train lane choice and signalling, while the Kasteeltraverse combines traffic lights, lanes and pedestrians in the centre. Cyclists near the station sharpen your observation. Finally, the A270 and N270 towards Eindhoven give you real experience at higher speeds. All of these situations can come up during your exam at the nearest CBR exam centre. Practising them in your own surroundings means fewer surprises later. That variety is a big advantage for anyone learning in English, because every new term gets linked to a real moment on the road.

Can my lessons start at my office?

Yes. Pick up and drop off at home, school or work are part of every lesson. Plenty of learners in Helmond use this to fit a lesson into a lunch break or straight after work. You simply tell us the address when you plan the lesson. It does not matter whether that is in Stiphout, Mierlo-Hout or the centre. Nearby places such as Mierlo, Deurne and Gemert are covered too. Starting at work has another benefit. You practise the exact route you will later drive home, including the roundabouts and junctions you meet every day. After the lesson you are brought back to wherever suits you best.

Will I drive on the A270 before my exam?

Most likely, yes. Once you handle town traffic confidently, your instructor adds faster roads to the plan. Around Helmond that means the A270 and the N270 towards Eindhoven. You practise joining traffic from the slip road, keeping a safe distance and leaving at the right exit. These skills matter beyond the exam, especially if you plan to commute. The timing depends on your progress, not on a fixed lesson number. Some learners reach this stage quickly, while others first need more time on roundabouts. A lesson of 90 or 120 minutes works well for these trips. It leaves enough time to drive out, practise and return without rushing.

What if my theory certificate is about to expire?

A CBR theory certificate stays valid for one and a half years. Within that period you need to pass the practical exam. If time is getting short, tell us during the trial lesson. A crash course is possible, with lessons planned closer together. Longer lessons of 90 or 120 minutes also help you cover more ground per week. Because there is no waiting list, you can start right away. We then request and arrange your practical exam as soon as you are ready. Still, it is wiser not to let it get that tight. Planning your first lessons soon after passing theory gives you breathing room for a calm preparation.

Do you offer evening lessons in Helmond?

Evening lessons are available, and weekend lessons as well. That suits learners who work full days in Helmond or commute to Eindhoven. You schedule lessons yourself, so you can move them when a project runs late or a trip comes up. Driving in the evening has a practical upside too. In autumn and winter it gets dark early, and your exam may take place in similar light. Practising around Brandevoort or on the Kasteeltraverse after sunset teaches you to read headlights, reflections and cyclists with lamps. Weekend lessons, in contrast, often feel calmer. Many learners combine both types to get a complete picture of local traffic.

What does the most popular package include?

Package D, called Zorgeloos, is the one most learners choose. It costs €2,702 including VAT and contains 34 lessons of 60 minutes plus the CBR practical exam. You can pay it in instalments. It also includes help with exam anxiety, useful if tests in a new country make you tense. The package suits complete beginners in particular. Someone who drove abroad for years often needs fewer lessons and might pick package A or B instead. During the free trial lesson your instructor gives honest advice about this choice. Lessons you do not use from a package are refunded, so you never pay for driving you skipped.

Are there any hidden costs at the start?

No. Every package price includes VAT, and in packages B, C and D the CBR practical exam is part of it. Package A is a refresher of 8 lessons for €560 and does not include an exam. What happens when you finish early or stop? Lessons you have not used from a package are refunded. That matters for internationals, because plans can change with a new job or a move. Your free trial lesson also costs nothing. It lets you see the lesson car, meet an instructor and decide afterwards whether the approach suits you. Being collected and brought home is included in every lesson as well.

How do I plan my free trial lesson?

Go to the form on this website and choose the free trial lesson. Add your address in Helmond or a nearby town, and say you would like English lessons. We then get in touch to agree on a date and time, also in the evening or at the weekend. On the day itself your instructor collects you at the address you gave. You drive a short route in your own area while your level is assessed. Afterwards you hear which package fits and roughly how many lessons to expect. There is no obligation at all. If you want to continue with our driving school Helmond team, you can start directly.
