Will my instructor speak English for the whole lesson?
Yes. Every lesson, explanation and piece of feedback is in English, from the trial lesson to the final drive before your exam. That matters more than many people expect. When a cyclist suddenly appears near the Spoorzone, you need to understand an instruction instantly, without translating in your head. Our instructors are certified and experienced, and they know which Dutch traffic terms confuse newcomers. Road signs and markings are explained as you meet them. You do not need any Dutch to start. Chances are you will pick up a few useful Dutch words along the way, simply because you hear them in context during lessons around Tilburg.
Can I exchange my foreign licence?
Sometimes, yes. Whether a foreign licence can be exchanged depends on the country where it was issued. Rules differ per country, so we cannot promise anything in advance. Check your own situation with the official authorities before you plan lessons. If an exchange is not possible, you take the CBR theory exam and the practical exam like any other learner. Experienced drivers from abroad may need fewer lessons, because the basics are already there. Your personal lesson plan then focuses on Dutch habits, such as bicycle streets, the Ringbanen and roundabouts in neighbourhoods like Tilburg-West. A free trial lesson shows quickly where you stand.
What does code 78 mean for me?
Pass your practical exam in an automatic and your licence will show code 78. With that code you are limited to cars that have no clutch pedal. For most people living in and around Tilburg, that is no real limitation, since automatic cars are increasingly common. Learning without a clutch also leaves more attention for traffic, which helps on busy routes like the Ringbanen. All Scoobz lessons are automatic, in new lesson cars. Should you ever need a manual licence, the code can be removed later. You then pass a new practical exam in a manual car, and that is the only extra step involved.
How old do I need to be?
You can take the theory exam from 16 and start driving lessons from 16 and a half. With the 2toDrive scheme you may take the practical exam from 17. Until you turn 18, you then drive with a coach who meets the CBR conditions. Most internationals who come to Tilburg for university or work are already older, so these limits rarely play a role. Still, they matter for younger members of expat families in places like Berkel-Enschot or Goirle. A teenager there can start early and be ready for the exam soon after their seventeenth birthday. Lessons can be planned around school hours.
What if I later want to drive a manual car?
Then you can remove code 78 by passing a new practical exam in a manual car. You do not need to take the theory exam again as long as your theory certificate is still valid. Scoobz itself teaches automatic only, so for manual lessons you would need another provider. For many drivers, that step is never needed. Learning in an automatic first lets you focus on traffic, priority and the cyclists around you. Especially in a busy city like Tilburg, that extra attention pays off on day one. Gear changes can always come later if your work or personal situation changes.
Where do my lessons start?
Pick up from home, school or work is included, and you are brought back afterwards. That works across the city, from the Centrum and Oud-Zuid to Udenhout and the Reeshof. Students living near campus can start straight after a lecture. Expats in Hilvarenbeek, Dongen or Rijen are welcome as well. Starting at your own door has a practical benefit. You learn the streets, roundabouts and junctions you will actually use once you have your licence. Lessons of 60, 90 or 120 minutes leave room for a longer route, for example from your neighbourhood onto the A58 and back via the Ringbanen.
