A licence that makes family life easier

A new home, a new school for the children and a supermarket you still need to find. For many internationals in Oosterhout, a car soon moves from luxury to necessity. Learning to drive here should fit into that busy start, not add to it.

So the first stop of every lesson is your own address. You get collected at home, at work or at school, and dropped off again afterwards. Evening and weekend slots make it possible to learn while a partner looks after the kids, or the other way round.

Perhaps you drove for years elsewhere, perhaps you never touched a steering wheel. Both are fine. During the free trial lesson at driving school Oosterhout we look at where you stand. Your personal lesson plan grows from there.

Local lessons

From Oosterheide to the A27

Most first lessons start somewhere quiet, such as a residential street in Vrachelen or Zuiderhout. Here you practise steering, braking and moving off without pressure. Once that feels natural, the roundabouts between neighbourhoods like Dommelbergen and Arkendonk come next. They reward early signalling and a steady speed. Oosterhout also has business parks where lorries load, unload and turn. Driving there teaches you to give large vehicles room and to read their movements early. Later the A27 and A59 enter the plan, both close to town. Joining fast traffic becomes a normal part of your week instead of a scary idea. Do you live in Dongen, Made, Teteringen or Geertruidenberg? Starting there is just as easy, and Breda is never far away.

Background

How a Dutch licence works for newcomers

Code 78 explained

An automatic exam gives code 78. You may then drive every car without a clutch pedal.

Every learner in the Netherlands passes two CBR exams. Theory comes first, with hazard perception, knowledge and insight. A pass gives you a certificate that holds for eighteen months. During those months the practical exam follows, a drive of 55 minutes. Expect independent driving plus manoeuvres like parking and turning around. Scoobz lessons all take place in automatic cars, so code 78 appears on your licence. With it you may drive every car that has no clutch pedal. Later on, passing another practical exam in a manual car makes the code disappear. Whether a foreign licence can be swapped depends on its country of issue. We make no promises about that, so ask the official authorities first. Meanwhile Scoobz requests and arranges the practical exam for you. Your instructor explains each step in English along the way.

This exam happens at the nearest CBR exam centre and lasts 55 minutes. Expect a section of independent driving plus manoeuvres like parking and turning. Safe choices count for more than perfect technique.

01

Near the business parks in Oosterhout, slow down when a lorry swings wide to turn and let it finish first.

02

On roundabouts in Dommelbergen or Oosterheide, signal right before your exit and check for cyclists on the cycle path.

03

When joining the A27, use the full acceleration lane to match the speed of traffic before you merge.

Lane choice

Picking the right lane before a junction

Newcomers often handle the car well yet still end up in the wrong lane. Dutch roads guide you with arrows on the tarmac and signs above or beside the road. Reading them early keeps your driving calm. This guide shows how an instructor trains that habit, from spotting the arrows to changing lanes in time.

01

Look further ahead

The most common mistake is looking only at the car in front. Arrows on the road and direction signs usually appear well before the junction. When you notice them late, you are forced into a hurried lane change. Train yourself to scan the road far ahead, then the mirrors, then the car in front. In lessons your instructor will ask out loud which lane you need next. Soon you start answering before the question comes. That small habit removes a lot of stress from busy junctions.

02

Mirror, signal, move

Changing lanes follows a fixed order. First check the inside mirror and the side mirror, then signal, then look over your shoulder. Only after that do you move across, smoothly and without braking. Signalling too late leaves other drivers guessing. Moving without the shoulder check is a classic exam fault, because a car can hide just beside you. Practise this order on quieter roads until it runs automatically. In an automatic car you have more attention free for it, since there are no gears to think about.

03

Missed it? Keep going

Sometimes you realise too late that you are in the wrong lane. Stay in it. Follow the arrows, take the turn you are in and find another way back. Crossing solid lines or stopping to squeeze in is dangerous and counts heavily against you in an exam. Examiners know that drivers sometimes miss a lane. They mostly watch how you handle it. A calm detour shows good judgement, while a sudden swerve shows the opposite. Your instructor will let you practise exactly this kind of recovery.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about Driving School Oosterhout

Question not listed?

Leave your details and we answer your question personally.

Ask your question →
Can my partner and I both take lessons?

Yes, each of you simply follows your own lesson plan. Many international households in Oosterhout start with one driver and soon realise a second licence makes life much easier. Each learner gets a free trial lesson, so both of you can see how it feels. Lessons can be planned at different moments, which allows one person to drive while the other stays with the children. Each of you can choose a different package, since experience levels often differ. Pick up and drop off apply to both of you, at home, at work or at school. Mention in the form that two people want to start.

My English is fine but not perfect. Is that a problem?

Not at all. Lessons are given in clear, everyday English, and your instructor adjusts the pace of explanations to you. Driving terms are explained with gestures, short examples and situations on the road itself. Many learners at our driving school Oosterhout speak English as a second or third language. What counts is that you understand the instruction and feel free to ask questions. If something is unclear, your instructor explains it again in different words. Over time you will also pick up the Dutch names of road signs and situations. That helps later, because the practical exam itself is a CBR exam.

Do lessons also start in Dongen or Made?

They do. Pick up and drop off cover the villages around Oosterhout as well, including Dongen, Made, Teteringen and Geertruidenberg. Many learners there work in Oosterhout or Breda. Beginning at your own address pays off, since the lesson covers streets you drive daily. A lesson might begin in Made, continue past the roundabouts of Oosterheide and finish back at your door. Prefer to start from work instead? That is possible too. Fill in the address that suits you when you request the trial lesson, and your instructor will meet you there each time.

Which package do most people choose?

Most learners go for package D, Zorgeloos. You get 34 lessons of 60 minutes, your CBR practical exam and support for exam anxiety. The price is €2,702 including VAT, and you can pay it in instalments. Learners without any driving experience often pick it, because it leaves room to grow without counting every lesson. Package C, Compleet, costs €2,046 for 24 lessons plus the exam, again payable in instalments. Drivers with experience abroad sometimes need fewer lessons and look at package B instead. After the trial lesson your instructor tells you honestly which option matches your level.

What if we move again before I finish?

International careers sometimes take unexpected turns. If you leave before using all the lessons in your package, the unused lessons are refunded. That rule applies to every package. Scoobz also teaches in several other Dutch cities, so moving within the Netherlands does not have to end your lessons. Talk to your instructor as soon as plans change. Together you can look at the remaining lessons and decide what makes sense. A theory certificate keeps its value for eighteen months, wherever in the country you end up.

Can lessons fit around school hours?

Yes, because you plan the lessons yourself. Some parents take a lesson in the morning after the school run, others prefer evenings once the children are in bed. Weekend lessons are available as well. Lessons of 60 minutes suit a short window in the day, while 90 or 120 minutes fit a free afternoon. Being collected at the school gate is possible too, with a ride home afterwards. That turns the daily school route into useful practice. Over a few weeks, you may find yourself driving that route alone with your own licence.

I feel nervous about driving. Can you help?

Nerves are very common, especially in a new country where traffic feels unfamiliar. Lessons start in quiet streets and only move on when you feel ready. Keeping the same instructor matters here, because you build trust and do not need to explain yourself again. Package D includes specific help with exam anxiety for learners who need it. Many nervous drivers find an automatic car calmer as well, since you do not need to think about gears or stalling. Talk openly about what worries you during the trial lesson. The lesson plan is then adapted to it.

Where do I request my trial lesson?

Use the form on this page. Tell us where you live or work, roughly when you are available and whether you have driven before. Expect a reply to agree on a time. When the day comes, your instructor waits at the address in the form. The trial lesson lets you experience the car, the instructor and the way of teaching without any obligation. Afterwards you hear what went well and which package could fit. Want to continue? Lessons can start right away, because there is no waiting list. Prefer to think about it first? No problem either.
